Britain comes out ahead in hand washing survey

The British have an excellent record of washing their hands after using the toilet, a new survey reveals.

A total of 89 per cent of British people claim they always wash their hands after using the loo, while a further 10 per cent say they usually perform this task.

The survey, carried out on behalf of SCA Tissue Europe by Easyresearch/Questback to coincide with World Toilet Day on November 19, revealed that Britain was among Europe’s front-runners when it comes to hand hygiene. Respondents from Germany and Sweden equalled Britain’s 89 per cent score, while Sweden came close behind with 87 per cent.

Bottom of the poll was Belgium where the hand washing figure was 76 per cent of people questioned. The France figure was slightly higher at 76.5 per cent.

''Good hand hygiene is crucial if you intend to stay healthy,” said Rolf Andersson, senior scientist at SCA.

“Bacteria can collect in places such as the toilet flush mechanism and the taps and if you have bacteria on your hands this can easily be transferred to the mouth.”

There is also the risk that a washroom user who has just washed their hands will pick up bacteria from the light switch or door handle before leaving the washroom. “If you wish to avoid touching these objects when you have just washed your hands, a good tip is to use a paper towel,'' said Rolf.

The survey, which questioned 2,500 Europeans regarding their toilet habits at work, also showed that 35 per cent of British people often think the workplace washroom appears to be dirty while only 21 per cent feel it always seems clean. Around 12 per cent of British respondents rarely or never use the toilet at work, preferring to use a toilet outside the workplace or wait until they return home.
