Fast food customers avoid napkin waste

Fast food customers are keen to aid the environment by cutting down on napkin waste, according to a study by a leading quick service chain.

And the study revealed that significant reductions in waste and consumption can be achieved by switching to the Tork Interfold Napkin Dispenser.

The internationally-renowned fast-food chain introduced Tork Interfold Napkin Dispensers into several branches in the UK, France and Germany and interviewed 1,700 customers regarding their perceptions of the system.

Tork Interfold Napkin Dispensers are designed to give out only one napkin at a time instead of dispensing them in clumps, which can be a problem with traditional napkin dispensers.

“Around 80 per cent of respondents preferred the Tork napkin system to the chain’s existing system because it controlled the number of napkins being taken out,” said SCA product and segment manager Julie Ray.

”It is encouraging that the need to be environmentally-friendly appears to be a key concern for consumers and that many respondents are appreciative of any efforts to minimise napkin consumption.”

Around 58 per cent of consumers actively took a napkin during their visit. When using Tork Interfold Dispenser Napkins an average of 1.6 napkins were taken out per person of which 0.2 were unused. This compared with an average of two napkins per person, of which 0.8 were unused, where napkins were offered in traditional dispensing systems or loose on the counter.

The Tork interfold Napkin Dispenser offers huge cost-in-use and environmental benefits over traditional dispensers, says Julie. “Fewer napkins used results in less waste being generated, fewer deliveries of new napkins, lower costs for fast-food outlets and less waste to landfill,” she said.
