French see the lighter side of hand hygiene
The season to be merry is unfortunately behind us – and all we can look forward to is the season to be laid low with colds and flu.
The importance of hand hygiene is constantly being stressed both in information sheets and on health organisation websites. But the French have decided to take a more light-hearted approach to the problem of avoiding hand-borne infections.
A humorous advert on French TV shows a man trying to perform various activities without using his hands including greeting friends and family, operating a photocopier, reading a restaurant menu and extracting money from an ATM.
The advert has been broadcast by Inpes - France’s national institute for health education - and its message is simple. If you wish to stay clear of seasonal illnesses you can either avoid using your hands completely (which is highly problematical) or you can wash those same hands more frequently.
The institute recommends washing the hands several times a day – particularly if you spend time with young children or the vulnerable elderly. Hand washing should be carried out thoroughly using soap, and the hands should be dried afterwards with a clean towel.
We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
