Global Handwashing Day
Nearly half of us have avoided using a public toilet due to hygiene concerns, according to an SCA study.
And one in 10 of have decided against travelling on public transport for the same reason.
These findings, which emerged in SCA’s 2011 Hygiene Matters study, are being highlighted in the run-up to Global Handwashing Day which takes place on October 15.
“When away from home we travel by public transport, eat with our hands at fast food restaurants and shake people’s hands at business meetings,” said SCA’s product and segment manager Charlotte Branwhite. “It is during such occasions that we should consider the importance of basic hygiene requirements such as washing the hands and drying them with single-use towels.
“Everyone in the hygiene industry has a responsibility to help raise hygiene standards to improve people’s health. After individual responsibility, our global survey shows that improved standards of hygiene in public places and public toilets are the most important measures.”
Respondents who took part in the Hygiene Matters Report 2011 study were asked if they had recently decided against carrying out a particular activity due to concerns about poor standards of hygiene and cleanliness.
A total of 47.9 per cent said they had avoided using a public toilet due to hygiene concerns, while 10.1 per cent had avoided travelling on public transport and 12.1 per cent had shunned a particular café, pub or restaurant.
The first Global Handwashing Day was held in 2008. The event is supported by governments, international institutions, private companies and individuals all over the world.
