Hands off that steering wheel!

Most of us try to avoid touching a communal toilet seat wherever possible – and we wash our hands immediately afterwards when we do.

But how often do you consider washing your hands immediately after parking your car?

New research from Queen Mary University, London, has revealed that the average car interior harbours around 700 harmful pathogens – around nine times as many as can be found on a public toilet seat.

The car boot is the filthiest area with 1,000 bacteria for every one and half square inches. And the steering wheel is another major bug trap according to scientists.

Most common pathogens found in cars include bacillus cereus – a bug that can cause food poisoning and is found in rice, pasta, potatoes and pies –and arthrobacter which is found in soil and human skin.

Key to the pathogen pile-up appears to be the fact that 42 per cent of motorists regularly eat while driving – and 10 per cent admit to never even wiping down the car’s interior.

It is at times like these when products such as the Tork Premium Hand Sanitiser come in handy!
