It’s easier than ever to find a toilet…….or is it?

It has happened to all of us at one time or another: we find ourselves in a strange town and we desperately need the toilet.

In the UK today it is becoming harder to find a public loo than ever. A squeeze on council spending and increased vandalism in some cities has forced many councils to close down their public conveniences. So what do you do when you’re away from home and you need the loo?

The good news is that there are now plenty of on-line resources to help you locate that elusive loo. If you have an internet connection on your mobile you can go to www.findatoilet.co.uk for instance where you will find a database of UK lavatories. Though here you will actually need to key in the name of the town to find a list of toilets - and not every town is represented. And meanwhile, you are getting more desperate all the time.

But never fear, go to www.looseeker.co.uk where by entering the town name or postcode you will be provided with a reassuringly familiar Google map that uses toilet signs to mark the nearest locations. However, the overlapping icons may force you to open several sub-pages before you can find the closest loo. And can you wait that long?

Of course, you could always try the unpleasantly-named www.sitorsquat.com which claims to be able to find the nearest toilet anywhere in the world. The pitfall here is that you will key in your location – Newport or Sudbury perhaps – and wait with agonising desperation only to be faced with a map showing all the toilets in Newport, Kentucky or Sudbury, Massachusetts.

When in London you can text TOILET to the Sat Lav service at 80097 for a reply text with the location and opening hours of the nearest public conveniences. But this only works in the City of Westminster and will cost you 25p plus your standard network rate.

When all’s said and done, maybe it is quicker to go the traditional route and head for the nearest café where a visit to the facilities can be bought for the price of a cup of tea!
