Quirky toilet wins top US prize
Question: what has comfy sofas, toddler zones and calming artwork depicting the night sky?
Yes, that’s right – the toilets at Chicago’s Field Museum which were recently voted the best washrooms in the US in an online poll.
The Field Museum's ground-floor restrooms beat off stiff competition including the Presidential Luxury Restroom Trailer in Virginia - designed for President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.
The Field's bathrooms were praised for their artwork featuring calming images of the night sky and for their eco-friendly automated taps. They were also lauded for family-friendly touches such as a "tot area" with smaller toilets and a nursing room with a sofa in the women's loo.
Unlike our own Loo of the Year awards, the America's Best Restroom contest is judged by a public vote and winning loos tend to be quirky and unusual rather than simply hygienic and well-equipped.
Previous winners have included the washrooms at the Grand Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, which featured a large red birdcage and gilded chandelier; and the Hotel Hermitage in Nashville, Tennessee, which boasts a stained-glass
ceiling and Persian rugs.
The Field Museum received an “America’s Best Restroom” plaque from sponsors Cintas Corporation for winning the 10th annual America's Best Restroom contest.
