The long queue for the world’s biggest loo
Few of us would choose to queue for the loo unless it was absolutely necessary.
But hundreds of people in Australia recently did exactly that in a bid to raise awareness of poor sanitation. And to ensure they gained maximum coverage, the loo they were queuing for was an over-sized model situated on Canberra’s Parliament House lawns.
Hundreds of people joined the symbolic queue to highlight the fact that 2.6 billion people around the world are still waiting to gain access to a toilet. The queue was made up of MPs, church leaders, aid workers, students, plumbers and other interested citizens.
The event was staged as part of Voices for Justice, Australia’s annual Micah Challenge event which involves hundreds of private citizens lobbying to ensure that global poverty stays on the political agenda.
According to national co-ordinator John Beckett the link between access to sanitation and global deaths is clear. “Lack of access to a toilet is not only enormously dehumanising, it’s literally a matter of life and death,” he said. “No-one should be dying for a dunny.”
