Europeans prefer paper towels
Nearly two-thirds of washroom users prefer to dry their hands with a disposable hand towel than with a warm air dryer or textile towel.
And 96 per cent of people perceive paper hand towels as being the most hygienic system available.
These were the results of a survey carried out by Intermetra on behalf of the European Tissue Symposium in June. The study revealed that 63 per cent of washroom users would use paper hand towels in preference to any other system. Only 28 per cent preferred warm air dryers and the rest favoured textile towels.
Nearly three quarters of all respondents (72 per cent) said hygiene was their highest priority when choosing a hand drying method, while 22 per cent were more concerned about speed of drying and six per cent said a “dry feel” was their top priority.
Disposable towels came out well
“When it came to the other two top hand drying priorities, disposable hand towels again came out well,” said SCA Tissue Europe’s UK and Ireland marketing director Jenny Turner. “It appeared that two thirds of people felt disposable hand towels dried their hands the fastest, while 50 per cent of respondents said they experienced the driest hand feel with paper towels. This compared with only 30 per cent for warm air driers and 18 per cent for linen roller towels.”
The Users Preferences In Hand Drying Systems survey polled 2,000 people from France, Sweden, Germany and the UK on their hand drying practices. More than a quarter of those questioned preferred not to dry their hands at all if they were unable to find a “suitable” hygienic hand drying system. And a total of 96 per cent of people perceived disposable hand towels as being the most hygienic hand drying option of all.
