Tork parent is the world’s second greenest company

Tork tissue manufacturer SCA is the second most environmentally-friendly company in the world, according to a report.

SCA gained the ranking in the Green Leaders Global Top Ten, published by the Independent newspaper in conjunction with Ethical Investment Research Services in June 07.

“To attain second place in a global ‘green list’ is a great achievement and one of which we are very proud,” said SCA Tissue Europe’s UK & Ireland Away From Home region director, Alexander de Jongh.

SCA was the only paper company to be ranked in the Green Leaders Global Top Ten and was beaten only by Vestas Wind Systems, the world’s leading manufacturer of wind turbines. In third place was Dutch banking group ABN-Amro. Also listed were electronics giants Sanyo and Philips plus Britain’s BT and Kingfisher organisations.

The Independent and EIRIS took into account a range of criteria when compiling the guide such as management systems, use of renewable energy, waste production, water use and improvements related to climate change.

SCA's strict sustainability policy

“At SCA we follow a strict environmental and sustainability policy and we are continuously striving to improve our environmental status,” said Alexander de Jongh.

“When choosing raw materials, product design, packaging and distribution systems we always consider environmental impact as well as the economic and functional aspects. In fact most of SCA’s products are produced from renewable and recyclable materials whenever this can be done without compromising safety and product quality.”

All timber supplied to SCA's mills and sawmills have been certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council or meets FSC criteria for certified timber. Today SCA is one of the world's largest suppliers of FSC-certified products.

The environmental credentials of SCA are becoming increasingly recognised in a climate where ethical manufacturing policies are growing in importance both for investors and for customers.
